  52. 2. Requirements
  53. ---------------
  54.  
  55. Operating System:
  56.  * RISC OS 3.10 or greater
  57.  
  58. Software:
  59.  * Newsbase version 0.54 or greater
  60.  * A news transport system (e.g. ka9q or freenews)
  61.  
  62. Newsbase is on the WWW at http://www.hep.umn.edu/~allan/newsbase/

  65. 3. Installing !Groups
  66. ---------------------
  67.  
  68. There are currently two ways of running !Groups:
  69.  
  70. (i)  Double click on it directly.
  71. (ii) Use the "New groups..." option in Newsbase.
  72.  
  73. If you are not likely to use method (i) then you should install !Groups inside
  74. the directory !Newsbase.AutoBoot. This will still boot it so that other
  75. programs can run it, but will hide the actual application from view.
  76.  
  77. Groups needs Newsbase to be present before it can begin, and you will be
  78. prompted for it if it is not loaded. Otherwise the main window will appear.
  79. Section 4 details this window.
  80.  
  81. If you have a file containing a full newsgroups listing, you should now tell
  82. Groups about it. Click MENU over the window, and choose "Configure". Drag
  83. the file to this new window and then click on Save.
  84.  
  85. The newsgroups carried vary from server to server, and your ISP should be
  86. able to provide you with a list. If this is not possible, the list of
  87. newsgroups carried by Demon Internet may be downloaded from
  88.  
  89.   ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/news/
  90.  
  91. in a variety of compressed forms.
  92.  
  93. * TIP *  You may find it easier to keep the newsgroups file in the same
  94.          directory as the !Groups application, and specify the filename as
  95.          "<Groups$Dir>.^.Newsgroups"
  96.

  98. If you use Acorn TCP/IP or FreeNet, Groups can grab the list directly from
  99. your news server. To do this, click MENU over the main window, and use the
  100. "Newsgroups list" option. This will open a taskwindow which can grab the list
  101. for you.
  102.  
  103. * NOTE * This facility has not yet been implemented. A volunteer to knock
  104.          up a quick program would be greatly appreciated. It is run in a
  105.          task window and should take the same parameters as the dummy
  106.          file supplied.
  107.  
  108.  
  109. Finally, you should configure the Newsbase "new groups expiry" time to
  110. be longer than the regularity of your new group checks. I would suggest
  111. two or three weeks as a sensible value.
  112.  
  113.  
  114. 4. The main window
  115. ------------------
  116.  
  117. This window consists of two parts. On the left is the "source" section,
  118. showing the various newsgroups lists. On the right is the "feed" section,
  119. showing the newsgroups that you are currently receiving.
  120.  
  121. Above the left-hand section is a menu button which allows you to choose
  122. what is displayed in that section. You may choose from:
  123.  
  124.  * The full newsgroup list (assuming one has been specified)
  125.  * The list of newly created newsgroups, as supplied by Newsbase
  126.  * The results of the last search operation (if there was one)
  127.

  129. There is an option in the configuration window to switch to a vertical
  130. display format with one list above the other, allowing more of the group
  131. name to be seen, and using less screen space.
  132.  
  133.  
  134. To start receiving a newsgroup, locate it on the left hand side and
  135. double-click. Groups will inform Newsbase and, after a short delay,
  136. the list will be added.
  137.  
  138. To stop receiving a newsgroups, locate it on the right hand side and
  139. double-click. Again, Groups will ask Newsbase to remove the group.
  140.

  142. You are also able to drag a newsgroup around the screen. You can drag
  143. it to another application to load it - e.g. drag to a text editor to
  144. insert the newsgroup name.
  145.  
  146. You can also drag to a filer window - a file called "Newsgroup" will be
  147. created, containing the name of the group.
  148.  
  149. In both instances, you may hold down CTRL to insert the group in URL format
  150. (e.g. news://comp.sys.acorn.announce/).

  153. 5. Interactive searching
  154. ------------------------
  155.  
  156. This method of search is most useful if you know how the newsgroup
  157. name begins. As you type a name, it is compared with the displayed newsgroup
  158. listing, which is scrolled appropriately.
  159.  
  160. To the right of the input field is a small box - if it is ticked, then
  161. a match has been found and you may press RETURN to add that group.
  162.  
  163. While using this method you can also use the up and down arrows, PgUp
  164. and PgDown, and Ctrl-Up and Ctrl-Down to navigate the newsgroup list.
  165.  
  166. While using this method, you may also use the following keys to navigate
  167. the newsgroup list:
  168.  
  169.   ⇧ / ⇩     Scroll up and down the list by one group
  170.  ^⇧ / ^⇩    Move to top or bottom of the list
  171. PgUp/PgDn   Move up and down by one page.
  172.  
  173. Press ESCAPE to close this window when you are finished with it.

  176. 6. Wildcard searching
  177. ---------------------
  178.  
  179. You can use wildcard searching while viewing any source, but note that it will
  180. only search the main list. Click MENU over the main window and go to the
  181. submenu "Wildcard search". Type in the the search string, including wildcards
  182. where necessary, and then press RETURN. The search will then commence.
  183.  
  184. Note that the search is not case-sensitive. If you are looking for a word as
  185. a part of a group name, then search for that group surrounded by wildcards.
  186. See examples below.
  187.  
  188. When the search is complete, the source window will change to display the
  189. results of your search.
  190.  
  191. Examples:
  192.  
  193. demon.*   to search for all Demon newsgroups.
  194. *music*   for all groups with "music" in their name.
  195. *.test    to list all the test newsgroups.
  196.  
  197. If you want to display the contents of the big-8 hierarchies (alt, comp, etc.)
  198. then there is a submenu off the main menu to do this for you. It simply
  199. initiates a wildcard search for alt.* etc.

  202. 7. New groups
  203. -------------
  204.  
  205. When you have selected the "New groups" source, Groups will display all
  206. the new groups created since you last used the button "Catch up".
  207.  
  208. The "Catch up" button will place a marker at the current date and time so
  209. that next time you select "New groups" you will only be given the most
  210. recent new groups.
  211.  
  212. If you wish to change this time to anything else, you may do so in the
  213. Configure window. Note that the date and time are in the NNTP format of
  214. "yymmdd" and "hhmmss", as mentioned in this window.
  215.  
  216. Click on "Beginning" to reset this timer, so you will be shown all
  217. new newsgroups that are on record.
  218.  
  219.  
  220. There is an option (in the configure window) to automatically merge the new
  221. groups listing into the main list when you catch up. This will ensure that
  222. your main newsgroups list is kept up to date. The procedure followed is
  223. as below:
  224.  
  225. i)   Copy the main list into the scrap directory in case something goes wrong
  226. ii)  Add the new groups to the bottom of the main list
  227. iii) Run the file "PostMerge" inside !Groups, which will normally run a
  228.      suitable re-sorting program (one is supplied).
  229. iv)  Move the new list back into the original list's position.
  230.  
  231. Since version 0.11, Groups will work out whether the re-sorting was
  232. successful and, if not, move the original file back into position. If for
  233. some reason this does not happen, you should be able to find a backup inside
  234. !Scrap.
  235.  
  236. * NOTE * Often newsgroups are created illegally, and they may be removed
  237.          quickly. Groups is only able to see groups that have been
  238.          created, not those that have been removed. Consequently, your
  239.          main newsgroups list may contain newsgroups that no longer
  240.          exist, so you should download an up-to-date list occasionally.
